Sliding Door Conversion & Structural Lintel Installation – Etobicoke Masonry Project


When it comes to masonry work, not every project is just repair. Some projects require structural changes that improve both the look and function of a home.

This project in Etobicoke Masonry involved converting two separate openings into one clean, continuous feature.


The Problem


The homeowner had:

  • A sliding door

  • A narrow adjacent opening

These two separate openings created:

  • A broken visual layout

  • Limited usability

  • Structural inefficiency with separate lintels

The goal was to combine both into one properly supported opening.


The Solution


To achieve this, we carried out a full structural masonry modification.

The work included:

  • Removing two existing lintels

  • Installing one continuous structural lintel across the full span

  • Preparing the opening for proper load distribution

  • Rebuilding the brickwork to match the existing home

  • Installing a custom Indiana limestone sill at the base

This type of work requires precision, planning, and proper sequencing to maintain structural integrity while achieving a clean final result.


Execution


Once the original openings were removed and prepped, we installed the new lintel to support the combined span.

From there:

  • Brickwork was carefully rebuilt using a Portland and lime mortar mix to match the existing joints

  • New bricks were integrated seamlessly with the original façade

  • The limestone sill was installed to provide both structural support and a finished appearance

Every step was done to ensure the final result looked natural and consistent with the home.


The Result


The final outcome is a clean, unified opening that:

  • Looks like it was part of the original build

  • Improves the overall appearance of the exterior

  • Provides proper structural support across the span

Instead of two awkward openings, the home now has one cohesive feature that enhances both form and function.
